The Discipline Behind the Lanes

What It Takes to Succeed

As Housemistress, I am often asked what success looks like – how it is achieved, and what makes some pupils stand out. The answer is rarely about natural ability alone. Instead, it comes down to something more meaningful: a quiet, steady dedication, a willingness to keep showing up, and the ability to find balance in a busy life. True success isn’t always loud or obvious. It lives in consistent effort, in how we handle setbacks, and in the way we support each other through the ups and downs. The following reflection, written by Annabelle a Year 12 pupil, offers a powerful insight into what this looks like in practice.

The Discipline Behind the Lanes

Success in swimming takes far more than talent – it demands dedication, resilience, and an unwavering drive to keep improving. For me, competing at both national and international levels means living by a demanding schedule and constantly balancing schoolwork, training, and recovery.

I train nine times a week in the pool, with each session lasting two hours. Mornings start early – 5:45am – which means I’m often racing the clock just to get to school on time. But the work doesn’t end there. Strength training twice a week helps build power, while Saturdays are strictly for rest – something I’ve learnt is just as important as any workout when it comes to staying physically and mentally ready.

Of course, not every race goes to plan. Last year, I missed out on a place at the European Juniors by just 0.1 seconds at the British trials. It was a crushing moment. But rather than letting disappointment define me, I chose to use it as motivation. This year, I approached things differently – letting go of the pressure and focusing on enjoying the race, not just chasing the result. That mindset shift, along with all the hard work behind the scenes, helped me secure my spot on the European Juniors team heading to Slovakia this summer.

But swimming is about more than early starts and personal bests. It’s also about people. My teammates are a huge source of motivation and support, and they help turn even the toughest training sets into moments of shared determination (and sometimes shared suffering!). My family plays just as big a role – keeping me grounded, offering perspective, and helping me juggle the demands of sport, school, and life.

Swimming at a high level is built on consistency, effort, and resilience. The discipline behind the lanes is what keeps me moving forward, learning from setbacks, celebrating small wins, and staying committed to the sport I love.

A Final Thought

This piece is more than just a story about swimming – it’s a reminder that the qualities behind success are within reach for every pupil. It takes courage to keep going when things don’t go your way. It takes maturity to balance commitments and to rest when needed. And it takes humility to learn, adapt, and grow. Whether your passion lies in sport, the arts, academics, or leadership, it is the same values – dedication, consistency, and balance – that will carry you forward. I hope this inspires you, as it has inspired me, to reflect on your own journey and the steps you can take towards the kind of success that matters most.

Wishing you a happy and restful Long Leave.
