At the heart of Barry lies connection — the quiet, powerful force that binds us together as a community. Whether it’s the Clarence connection as our older girls prepare to take their next steps, the seniors who continue to inspire us long after they’ve left, the parents who walk alongside us in support, or the Family Trees that link generations within the House — each connection forms a thread in the rich tapestry of Barry life.
These relationships remind us that education is not just about achievement, but about belonging. Every conversation, every shared laugh, every act of kindness builds a sense of continuity that transcends time and distance. It is this network of connections — between pupils, parents, seniors, and staff — that makes Barry more than a House; it makes it a home.
In the reflection below, Eva captures one of these special bonds — the Family Tree connection — and reminds us why these traditions matter so deeply.
Family Tree Connections in Barry House
Family Trees have been part of Wycombe Abbey for generations, long before I joined Barry. I still remember the excitement I felt in UIII when I discovered who my House Mother was, and how a simple “hey” message from her made my day. It was such a small gesture, yet it made me feel seen and truly welcomed.
When I reached LIV and it was my turn to send that message instead, I was surprised by how nervous I felt — it mattered so much what my House Daughter would think of me.
The Family Tree system has always stood out to me as one of the most special parts of life in Barry. My House Mother helped me settle in, guided me, and became a role model for the kind of person I hope to become. Through her kindness and encouragement, I learned the importance of connection and community.
This year, I hope to place even more emphasis on our Family Trees. Though they can sometimes drift apart as new routines and friendships form, they remain a treasured part of Barry life — a tradition that connects generations of pupils and helps each of us grow with confidence and care.
Whether it’s through Family Tree debating, baking competitions, dinners, breakfasts, or simply taking time to check in with one another, these small moments build lasting bonds. They create friendships and memories that stay with us long after our time at school — and that’s what truly makes Barry feel like home.

Activities Days and Shared Experiences
The recent school-wide Activities Days were a highlight of the half term, offering pupils across all year groups the chance to explore, collaborate, and grow through shared experiences. LIV travelled to Normandy, immersing themselves in French culture and language; UIV spent an exciting few days at Beaumanor Hall, developing teamwork and leadership skills; LV completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition with determination and resilience; and UV embarked on a moving and memorable visit to the World War I trenches in France and Belgium.
To give an insight into that experience, Anna (UV) reflects on the impact of the Trenches Trip and what it meant to see history come to life.
The Trenches Trip
The Trenches Trip began with an early departure and our arrival in Ypres later that morning. Guided by experienced historians, we visited two burial sites and explored a preserved trench — an unforgettable opportunity to experience history first-hand. That evening, we attended the moving ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial.
The following day, we travelled to the Somme, where we visited the Lochnagar Crater and the Thiepval Memorial, gaining valuable insight into the scale and sacrifice of the First World War.
It was a memorable and thought-provoking experience that deepened our understanding of the war and its lasting impact. We are very grateful to the staff who accompanied us and organised such an inspiring trip.

A Strong and Connected Barry
Bringing the Barry community together through shared experiences continues to be at the heart of House life. From Family Tree meals and bracelet-making to kindness cards, movie nights, and a shared appreciation of good food, these moments strengthen the bonds that make Barry so special.
This first half of the Autumn Term has been filled with laughter, learning, and leadership — proof that Barry girls are stronger together. The Barry community is strong, caring, and kind — a House built on respect, compassion, and a genuine sense of belonging.
