The Junior House Blog: Rainy Days and Sunny Spirits

As the Spring Term reaches its halfway point, it feels like a natural moment to pause and take stock of life in Junior House. The darker mornings and rainier days of January and February have not dulled spirits here; instead, the House has felt settled, busy, and quietly full of confidence. The girls returned after Christmas with a sense of familiarity and assurance that comes from truly feeling at home, and that has shaped the half term in the most positive way. 

What has stood out to me most over recent weeks is the ease with which the girls now move through their days. Friendships are well established, routines are second nature, and there is a gentle, relaxed togetherness that underpins House life. The girls look out for one another instinctively, share space generously, and take real pride in being part of Junior House. These small, everyday moments that I see when girls are clapping each other’s achievements in House Order, helping a friend reach a toy that fell behind the bed, or cheering a Junior House duckling performing on stage, are where their flourishing is most evident to me. 

Creativity and curiosity have continued to weave their way through this half of term. The girls have relished opportunities to explore new interests and ideas, particularly during a vibrant Societies Sunday that left them brimming with enthusiasm and eager to share what they had discovered. Evenings in House have offered a balance of calm and fun, all contributing to the sense that Junior House is a place where girls feel relaxed, safe, and very much themselves. Our first Junior House Spa Night was a winner, and I think they’re all looking forward to the return of another Karaoke Night or Corridor Catwalk! 

There have also been moments where the girls have stepped confidently into the spotlight. Watching members of Junior House perform this half term has been a reminder of just how much courage these young girls possess. Whether dancing in front of the whole School or representing the House in creative and academic arenas, they have done so with poise and determination, supported, of course, by an enthusiastic and loyal UIII contingent in every audience. This term, our girls have been stars in a range of shows, including the Spotlights showcase, Wycombe’s Got Talent, and the Orchestral Concert. 

Beyond performances, the girls have continued to challenge themselves in a variety of ways. Sporting fixtures have brought teamwork and resilience to the fore, while opportunities for individual achievement, such as the poetry declamation and the independent Classics Ovid projects, have allowed them to shine academically and creatively. Each accomplishment, large or small, has contributed to a strong sense of collective pride. 

A particularly meaningful strand of the past few weeks has been the girls’ engagement with the wider world. Through collaborative projects and shared celebrations during Global Celebration Week, they have explored ideas of culture, identity, and community, working together to create their beautiful doorway mural as a vibrant and symbolic of their place within the School. These experiences have encouraged reflection, empathy, and a growing awareness of how they belong not only to Junior House, but to a much broader global community. 

Looking ahead has also been an important theme for us. Gentle conversations about future pathways and the skills needed for life beyond Junior House have been woven in, helping the girls to see how the qualities they are developing now, like their curiosity, confidence, kindness, and communication, will serve them well in the years to come. With opportunities to practise hosting, conversation, and leadership in their Come Dine With Me dinner parties, there is a tangible sense of excitement about what lies ahead. 

We close the half term on a joyful note with our Galentine’s Challenge, which has brought a wonderful buzz to the House. Dorms have been working together each evening with great spirit, focusing on reading, connection, and teamwork as they aim to be crowned champions. The prospect of a celebratory pyjama party and a much-coveted hamper of treats have added to the fun, but it is the sense of camaraderie and shared purpose that has truly made this such a fitting end to the half term. It has been a perfect embodiment of this term’s Mental Health Awareness Week theme, ‘My Place’. 

To the girls of Junior House: this half term has shown just how far you have come. You have embraced each week with warmth, resilience, and a growing confidence in yourselves and one another. Junior House is a richer, happier place because of the way you live and learn together, and I could not be prouder of the community you are building. 

I hope the break ahead offers time to rest, recharge, and enjoy being with family, and I look forward to welcoming the girls back for the next chapter of the Spring Term. Wishing a very happy Chinese New Year to you all.
