Making Friends for Life

Bringing our Barry community together.

As we move through  February towards March I am pleased to say that Barry pupils are thriving. The House morale and sense of community is high, it truly is a great environment to be in. The girls are enjoying this short but busy Spring Term, with some interesting and innovative evening activities designed to allow the House to spend time together whilst also giving them the opportunity to develop their leadership, social and emotional skills. In Barry we always try to offer pupils a space for relaxation, fun, laughter and time-out from their busy schedules. This time is also used to make friends for life, but do not take it from me, here is what the girls have to say.

Crochet Club

Crochet Mondays is a lot of fun; we play music and talk together while relaxing and learning a new skill. I love crochet evenings as it allows me to share my favourite hobby with my House and spend time with everyone!

IT Help Sessions

I have run this session weekly and helped both pupils and staff to navigate Excel, printing, and WiFi issues. My favourite part is of course helping others but also catching up with everyone. I think it is incredibly important to learn new skills as technology evolves and to keep up with the changing world.

Book Club

We gather in the drawing room on Tuesdays and talk about what we have recently read; starting with the wonderful matron and host, Miss Holland, who generously provides treats and a wealth of knowledge from her librarian years. Last week we celebrated Lunar New Year, talking through some of our favourite Chinese novels, recommending Chinese authors and discussing the theme of “tiger”, in keeping with this year’s zodiac – finishing with a reading of The Tyger by William Blake, but we usually end with a collective reading of a children’s bedtime story to ready us for bed! Book club for us is about relaxing, having fun, and encouraging the love of reading as much as possible in House!

Nutritional Tuesdays

Nutritional Tuesdays at Barry consists of a variety of coloured vegetables and fruits from peppers to beetroot with hummus and carrots alongside a strawberry and banana smoothie and something green to wash it down. This fits in nicely with this term’s theme of nutrition. We enjoy feeding our mitochondria the colours of the rainbow.

Prep Help Sessions

We have been running prep help sessions since last year when it was run by current Clarence girls and it’s super exciting to be able to carry on such a great tradition. These sessions run in the drawing room by Mons and younger girls can seek help with prep or areas which they find challenging. This is a great way for us to get to know the girls in other years as well as share our experience and knowledge of GCSE and A levels.

Toastie Thursdays

Another activity the House puts on is Toastie Thursdays which have really become a part of my week which I always look forward to. There are always delicious, yummy fillings and it’s the perfect time to share our thoughts, experiences and ideas.

Fruity Fridays

Every Friday we meet in the kitchen to share platefuls of refreshing fruit. Ms Hurribunce provides us with a huge range of fruits: from melons and mangoes to a variety of berries. It is such a great tradition to have, and we are all grateful for the relaxing end to the week and a delicious and healthy snack.

Movie Night

Another bonding opportunity where all differences are put aside as the lights are turned off and the movie begins. Sharing laughs, tears and chills, Saturday movie night brings everyone together. Movies are picked by a vote and is always entertaining. This weekend we watched Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings! The Marvel movie was thoroughly enjoyed by those who had stayed at School over the weekend.
