Christmas in Cloister

What a successful and joy-filled half term this has been in Cloister House. The girls have thrown themselves into every opportunity with enthusiasm, creativity, and kindness, and it has been a real pleasure to watch the House come together in so many different ways. 

The first Wednesday of this half term was Bonfire Night, and it certainly did not disappoint. The LIV had been busily putting on their creative hats to produce the House Guy. They chose Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc. and, right up until the night before, they were painting, sticking, and colouring with admirable determination. It was truly well deserved that they were crowned the winners of the competition. This is the first time in my tenure as Housemistress that we have won, and I was incredibly proud of the girls and the tremendous effort they put in. The addition of Mrs Duncan’s favourite book tucked under his arm was a clever and thoughtful touch that made everyone smile! Chelsea and Catherine also did the House proud by organising a fantastic charity stall featuring a hamper raffle and chocolate-covered strawberries. They raised a hugely impressive £1,028.17: an extraordinary amount that will make a meaningful difference to the School Charity total. 

We continued our winning streak with House Ensembles, thoughtfully organised by Vivienne. She put together a beautiful and sensitive arrangement of Mystery of Love by Sufjan Stevens. It was performed by Vivienne, Elizabeth, August, Aiza, Phoenix, and Isabelle. Their music was accurate and calming, and they were very worthy winners. It was lovely to see such teamwork and musical talent on display. 

The UIV Dance Competition also deserves a special mention. The girls worked incredibly hard in the build-up to the performance, showing real commitment during rehearsals (even getting out of bed early to rehearse!). Their stage presence, combined with some impressive gymnastics elements, made the dance a genuine joy to watch. Although we did not win on this occasion, the girls should be commended for their enthusiasm, creativity, teamwork, and supportive spirit throughout the entire process. 

Alongside these School-wide events, we have also enjoyed a wide range of in-House activities run by Rosa and Freya. House Cluedo has continued with great energy, and we have had some very amusing captures along the way that have provided plenty of laughter. We have also run ‘small acts of kindness’, which have helped foster a lovely atmosphere in the House. We will end the term with our much-anticipated Secret Santa. 

The final weekend of the Christmas term is always incredibly special, and this year was no exception. On Saturday, the girls enjoyed cosy dorm feasts with films in their rooms; a perfect opportunity to relax together after a busy few weeks. Sunday was the highlight. We gathered for a warm and festive Christmas morning in the Panel Room, opening gifts, chatting, and singing Christmas songs together. Afterwards, we squeezed into the dining room with the rest of Daws Hill for a delicious lunch of roast turkey and mince pies, which was enjoyed by all. The day concluded with House Families spending meaningful time together and reflecting on the importance of friendship, kindness, and community; values that lie at the heart of Cloister House. 

This has been a truly wonderful term, full of achievement, laughter, and togetherness. I wish everyone in our Cloister community a restful, peaceful, and enjoyable Christmas holiday, and I look forward to welcoming the girls back in the New Year.
