Sports
After winning House Sport at the end of Spring Term, the Shelburne girls have been keen to maintain their lead. Our tennis players gave fantastic performances in the Inter-House Tennis Funals, and they are looking forward to the upcoming Inter-House Cricket Funals and Sports Day in June. Matilda, Cosima and Izzy competed at the ESAA Track and Field Cup this half term, and contributed to their teams winning first place in their respective age categories. Carolina has continued to compete regularly for Beaconsfield Cricket Club, and Milly and Matilda have kept up a busy schedule of Netball training and matches for their clubs. A huge congratulations must also go to Zoe, who has been selected for the National Academy in Lacrosse.
UIII Transition
This half term, the UIII Shelburne pupils have joined us for some ‘get to know you’ events with the LIV and UIV. So far they have come together for a dinner, a picnic, games and a tour of the House. The process of allocating the UIII to a House Family will soon begin; a long-standing tradition that helps pupils to establish friendships that transcend age, background and interests. Upon joining a Senior House, each pupil is connected to a lineage of girls that can be traced back many years. The most important of these family connections is the House Mother and House Daughter bond: a duo of pupils in consecutive school years. The House Mother acts as a friend and mentor to their ‘daughter’ in the year below and is there to support them throughout their time in the House.
Activities
Despite the girls having exams, the turn-out at House activities has remained high, with tru fru, chips n’ dips and flippin’ friday crepe nights remaining firm favourites! The return of Daws Hill rounders has been a hit, and many girls have also found time to enjoy recreational tennis and evening runs with friends. Earlier this term, Daws Hill was fortunate enough to receive a visit from Mrs Ashby-Rose’s adorable litter of Labrador puppies!
The UIV enjoyed a tutor outing to Wagamama’s before heading to the Wycombe Swan to watch Blood Brothers. They are currently studying the play in their English lessons.
Music
Kate competed in the Ballade category of the London International Chopin Competition, achieving Highly Commended for her performance of Chopin Ballade No.4 in F minor. Kate was invited to play in a Finalist’s concert in London earlier this month, and treated pupils and staff to a practice performance in the new Music Atrium.
Mij also gave a fantastic performances of California Dreamin’ and Viva la Vida, accompanied by Junior Concert Band. If you missed it, you will have another opportunity to see her in action on Dove Day!
Clarence Leavers
The first half of the Summer Term is the time when we wish an emotional farewell to the Shelburne UVI, who will be leaving Wycombe Abbey after sitting their A level exams. In April, Miss Tay and I were honoured to be invited to Clarence House, where we were treated to snacks and enjoyed reminiscing about their time in Shelburne. We marked the end of their time at School at the annual Clarence Leavers’ service. The evening began with a Chapel service, where the girls belted their favourite hymns and watched video messages from staff. After a drinks reception in the Cloisters, the guests were treated to a formal dinner and evening of dancing. I would like to take this opportunity to wish the UVI the very best of luck for their exams, and to thank them for their wide-reaching contributions to Shelburne during their time with us. They all have incredibly bright futures ahead of them and I hope they keep in touch!
