Spring Term in Airlie

We began the year in Airlie with great excitement as we revealed our brand-new dorms. There was a definite buzz in the corridors — mixed with a touch of nostalgia — as we said a momentous goodbye to our beloved dorm, ‘Great Bear’. So many memories were made there: whispered conversations after lights out, birthday surprises, exam pep talks, and the comforting sense of togetherness that defines boarding life. While it was hard to say farewell, we were thrilled to welcome two beautifully renovated dorms in its place, marking an exciting new chapter for Airlie.

The girls have thoroughly enjoyed settling into their fresh surroundings. The rooms are bright and spacious, with just enough room in the centre for a lively game of Dobble before bedtime. It has quickly become something of a dorm tradition — cards flying, competitive spirits rising, and plenty of laughter echoing through to neighbouring dorm ‘Vega’. The new dorm arrangements have also meant new dorm mates, new friendships, and the chance to create brand-new memories together. There is something special about those evening chats, when stories are shared and friendships quietly deepen.

At the end of January, we introduced two tropical fish to the LV study room. They have been a welcome addition to the space and have quickly become part of daily life in Airlie. Our LV girls have taken responsibility for feeding them and keeping the tank clean, showing great care and teamwork – the fish have been fondly named Poppy Jr. and Hemen Jr. They were also popular with parents and pupils who visited during the offer holders’ tours, adding something extra to see in our study area!

Early in the term we reunited with Campbell House for our much-anticipated Inter-House Quiz. The atmosphere was electric as teams huddled together, whispering last-minute answers and celebrating every correct response. We were absolutely delighted to discover that both Airlie teams won by a landslide, continuing our impressive winning streak following last term’s Dodgeball success. As much as we cherish our sister House, there is nothing quite like a bit of friendly competition to bring out everyone’s best. Next term we are already looking forward to the Fooseball Tournament against Campbell, where a brand-new trophy awaits its first champions. The friendly rivalry is building!

During Global Celebration Week, each House was asked to decorate a ‘door’ to reflect both House identity and cultural diversity. The girls worked together to design a display featuring a flag for every nationality represented in Airlie, with our House mascot, ‘Bearlie’, placed at the centre. It was very much a team effort. With a deadline approaching, we spent an evening in the Art Department putting the finishing touches to the project. The final result was colourful and meaningful, celebrating the different backgrounds that make up our House community.

Airlie also led the first House Chapel of the term, based on the theme of Noah’s Ark. The focus was on remaining hopeful during challenging times, a message that resonated with many of the girls. Elise read the Lord’s Prayer in Cantonese, which was a thoughtful way to reflect the international nature of our House. We also sang our House anthem, In Christ Alone, which is one of my personal favourites.

The Oriental Society held an evening of music during the term, and we were proud of Dorcas for performing a beautiful piano piece. She played with confidence and care, and it was lovely to see her share her musical talent with others. Events like this are always a lovely reminder of the many interests and abilities we have within Airlie.

As always, some of the most enjoyable moments of boarding life are the quieter ones. One weekend we organised a Galentine’s-themed night in. We shared nachos and a sweetie platter, and some of the girls’ decorated cookies, which proved to be both creative and delicious. Afterwards, everyone settled down to watch a film, complete with face masks and blankets. It was a relaxed and happy evening, giving the girls time to unwind and enjoy each other’s company.

Airlie showed up to the Netball Funnals with determination and pride. Although we finished last overall, the team played with determination and the House showed excellent support from the sidelines. Many girls came along to cheer, demonstrating real encouragement and unity. We were pleased to be recognised for our strong House Spirit, which reflects the supportive atmosphere the girls create for one another.

Overall, it has been a busy and positive start to the year in Airlie. From settling into new dorms and welcoming our fish, to competitions, chapel, and relaxed weekends together, the term has been full of shared experiences. What stands out most is the way the girls continue to support one another, whether through teamwork in competitions, creativity in projects, or simply spending time together at the end of the day. It is this sense of community that continues to make Airlie a welcoming and enjoyable place to live.
