Celebrating an Extraordinary First Term in Junior House
As we reach the end of our very first full Term in Junior House, it feels only right to pause and celebrate everything the girls have achieved in these busy, joyful, and often very memorable months. What a journey it has been. When the girls arrived in September so full of anticipation, excitement, and a few butterflies, we knew they had so much ahead of them – new routines to learn, friendships to form, challenges to rise to, and moments of laughter and discovery that would come to define their first year in the boarding community. Now, looking back, it is remarkable to see just how far they have come.
Throughout the Term, the girls have embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm and courage. From their earliest House activities of team-building evenings, our Junior House scavenger hunts, and the first cosy Sunday brunches, to the more reflective moments we shared around wellbeing, homesickness, and settling into dorm life, each girl has shown resilience and warmth as she has adapted to her new surroundings. The friendships that have blossomed across the House have been one of the true joys to watch. In every previous letter, I have found myself celebrating the little moments like the cheerful chatter at breakfast, the way girls quietly support others who might be missing home, and the sense of unity that seems to strengthen by the week. These small but significant glimmers of kindness have shaped Junior House into a special place, just as much as the larger events have.
And what a collection of events it has been! Junior House has been buzzing with activity, colour, and creativity each week. The girls threw themselves into weekend adventures, School-wide celebrations, academic enrichment, and traditions both old and new. They have demonstrated impressive organisation skills as they juggled busy schedules, and equally impressive energy levels as they danced, competed, cooked, crafted, and collaborated their way through each week.
As we approached December, the excitement truly began to rise. We started the festive season with a flourish, and these final days have been nothing short of magical. The girls really shone in our UIII Carol Service, singing with heart, confidence, and a sense of togetherness that moved quite a few to tears. This was such highlight of the Term for me, and listening to the girls sing ‘Angels’ was a moment I will treasure for a very long time.
Of course, our celebrations did not end there. Our Pyjama Party Christmas Film Night went down very well, complete with snuggly blankets, chocolate strawberries, and the kind of laughter that can only come from being surrounded by good friends. We enjoyed Christmas Day Lunch together as a House, turning the dining hall into a sea of party hats, silly jokes, and festive cheer. And then came our very first “Innings” (a Wycombe Abbey tradition that the girls will come to love each Term). We surprised the girls with a roller disco complete with a chocolate fruit fountain and photo booth, and they absolutely loved it! To top it all off, the staff took great delight in surprising the girls with a very special Christmas pantomime.
As the Term draws to a close, I could not be prouder of each girl. They have approached their first months at Wycombe Abbey with determination, kindness, humour, and an open-hearted willingness to try new things. They have supported one another, celebrated one another, and contributed to a community that already feels deeply rooted in warmth and spirit. It has been a privilege to witness their growth and to share in so many moments of happiness and achievement.
To all our Junior House families, I wish you peace, joy, and treasured time together this Christmas. May the break be restful and restorative, and may the New Year bring good health, happiness, and countless reasons to smile.
